Earth is facing challenges, yet optimism persists. A fresh honor from the science, music and arts festival Starmus aims to inspire individuals to take action.

The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal is to be awarded in honour of the renowned scientist and conservationist who died this year. It seeks to acknowledge individuals and groups that champion our planet's biodiversity.

Award Details

The first recipients are expected to be announced at the Starmus VIII festival in the Canary Islands, scheduled from October 17th to 22nd the coming year.

Reports indicate that Jane Goodall, who was a Starmus advisory board member, had backed the award’s creation. “The vision behind this medal, and the festival being tasked to oversee it, originated with Jane,” a representative said. “Her desire was that she wanted this to happen. This is likely due to the close connection she had with us.”

“The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will acknowledge sustainable programmes carried out to build an environment a better place for people, animals and the environment and offer support to continue that work,” commented a relative.

Structure and Vision

A co-founder of the festival stated that the medal – which was announced at a scientific institution – will likely have multiple categories.

“It will be very much similar to the Stephen Hawking award honoring scientific outreach that we created exactly 10 years ago,” it was explained. Jane Goodall was an honoree of that award.

Expressing concern about the future for Earth, one figure stated, “Honestly, it is difficult to maintain optimism. Present governance in one major nation represents a dismissal of evidence. This situation significantly hampers collective action.”

“In truth, the situation appears particularly bright therefore we must commence reflecting, more deeply regarding the impact of human activity. This concern encompasses not only global warming, that’s the whole way that we treat nature.”

Following an Example

Therefore, observers believe it was a good time to emulate Goodall’s example. “I think that in bestowing this medal, the focus will be on this essential spirit that Jane embodied – that was her priority, to transform how we regard wildlife around us.”

A pressing concern currently is the proliferation of misinformation. The theme of the upcoming Starmus festival will be “the pursuit of factual understanding”.

“There is a recognition that factual reality has become contested when politics is involved. This is a perilous development,” it was said. “The science of climate remains a scientific discipline; it is impossible to allow interference by political agendas in this field.”

The goal remains that this honor will inspire concrete steps. “The purpose is motivating others to participate and to care and to strive toward these goals, really. Regardless of if we feel hopeful, we have to focus on working the best we can,” a statement concluded. “Be prepared for setbacks, but you still continue striving toward success.”

A descendant engaged in environmental protection shared hope that “with guidance and when empowered, humanity are capable of being responsible caretakers of our planet”, highlighting the initiatives of a foundation that, in addition to its projects, helps the next generation become engaged with their community, animals, and environment.

“As my late grandmother constantly reminded us, our daily actions make a difference and it is up to us the kind of difference we choose to create,” he said. “There is still time and the Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will give encouragement and raise awareness about beneficial initiatives currently in progress.”
