Iran Claims Attack on US Base in Bahrain, As Part of Widespread Military Operations.
Tehran reports attacking a US naval base in Bahrain, as Iran launched strikes across the region in retaliation for a large-scale and ongoing assault targeting the nation by the United States and Israeli forces.
Huge plumes of black smoke were seen rising from an vicinity close to the headquarters of the American Fifth Fleet in Manama, Bahrain. The full scale of any impact is not yet known and the US has remained silent.
Airspace Engagements
Elsewhere across the region, the UAE, the State of Qatar and Kuwait - each hosting US military bases - stated they have shot down incoming projectiles in their airspace.
In Doha, Qatar's defence ministry announced it had successfully engaged several missiles apparently targeting the al-Udeid air base, the biggest US military installation in the Middle East.
Iran's Declared Retaliation
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard said in a statement it was targeting American facilities and interests as part of military campaign "Truthful Promise 4", in response for the strikes on the Islamic Republic launched by the United States and its ally Israel on Saturday.
That US-Israeli operation - launched at approximately 09:15 Iran time - has so far struck sites associated with the Tehran's leadership, with US President Donald Trump encouraging the people of Iran to revolt against the government.
Wider Impacts
In the State of Israel, air raid sirens sounded across the country after the Israel Defense Forces reported it had identified an incoming Iranian missile barrage.
The defence ministry of the United Arab Emirates stated that the nation has been subjected to a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".
"Emirati air defenses engaged the projectiles with notable success and successfully intercepted a series of missiles," it added.
The statement noted missile fragments fell on a neighborhood in Abu Dhabi, resulting in some structural damage and fatalities.
The United States Air Force operates from Al Dhafra Air Base, to the south of Abu Dhabi, along with the UAE Air Force.
