The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have announced the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.

The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still under care, with several in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
