Two Victims Identified in Brown University Shooting as Police Persist in Search for Perpetrator.
Both young individuals who lost their lives in the recent mass shooting on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – as a manhunt for their killer carried on following the discharge by local law enforcement of the sole person questioned in the case.
Remembering Ella Cook
The student Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was called “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, per the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a gathering on Sunday.
She served as second-in-command of Brown’s branch of the College Republicans organization, the group said. Karoline Leavitt also posted sympathies publicly, remarking: “It's indescribable. Remembering her family and friends, particularly her mother and father.”
The Second Victim
The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his initial year at the Ivy League university, according to relatives.
The victim's identification was verified by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and assisting patients,” his sibling Samira said in a tribute.
Details of the Attack
Nine other people were injured in the weekend shooting in the school of engineering of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the university's examination week.
Law enforcement reported late Sunday that a 24-year-old male detained in a search at a Hampton Inn about around 27 kilometers from the scene earlier in the day was being released.
“We have a murderer out there,” stated the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you have to regroup and go in another, and this is precisely what occurred over the last day or so.”
Ongoing Concerns
The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate fresh anxiety for our community”.
The assailant opened fire inside a lecture hall in the engineering facility on over the weekend, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a handgun, a law enforcement official told the media outlet.
Law enforcement that raided the lodging seized two handguns and magazines when the individual was detained, as was reported.
The Wounded Victims
Of the nine hurt, one pupil was released from the hospital, said Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in critical but stable condition, and one remained in critical care, authorities stated on Sunday.
Durham Academy, a private K-12 school in the city of Durham, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.
Further Tributes
Tributes were paid to Cook at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only during her upbringing... but at the university she was a radiant presence in that institution as well.”
The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the group. “Ella was known for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she worked for her branch and peers,” he said.
An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the student's death in a message. “We extend our sincere condolences to the Umurzokov family, loved ones, and fellow students and lament the passing of his potential.”
