During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a different age” and an bold beginning to his administration.

An Unprecedented Figure

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering basic services: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
